Scouts Update
Fortitudine Vincimus
The Shackleton family motto is the Latin Fortitudine Vincimus, which translates to By Endurance We Conquer. With that in mind they perhaps had a clue of what was to come when an adventurous team of Scouts from Hatch Warren entered the Endurance40. The 40km hike though the Chilterns offered the opportunity for them to pit their wits against the distance, the terrain and the weather; using their map and compass skills to navigate the route themselves. They certainly needed endurance a-plenty; each one at some point having to overcome a personal physical or mental challenge. Perhaps a recent presentation from a more modern adventurer, James Ketchell, left each step brings you closer to your goal ringing in their ears. Wherever each of them found their inspiration; their efforts are to be commended, with 3 of the team completing the whole route in 13h 09m – Fortitudine Vincimus indeed.
Whilst our 4 intrepid adventurers were enduring the Chilterns, 12 other members of the troop were taking on other challenges as part of our annual Troop Camp. In the morning it was height as they each attempted the site climbing wall. Our young leaders ran an excellent orienteering afternoon before everyone set about constructing their kebabs to cook over the campfire. On Sunday, with our Endurance team back on camp, it was a soggy day of air rifle shooting and of packing our kit to before heading home.
An excellent weekend of activities and adventure all round! For more information about Hatch Warren Scout Group, please visit www.hwsg.org.uk.
