Help black cats in Basingstoke improve their luck
Cats Protection’s Basingstoke & District Branch held its annual National Black Cat Day on Thursday 31 October to encourage people to find a place in their hearts and homes for an unwanted black or black-and-white moggy.
Following the success of last year’s black cat campaign, the charity asked people to ‘paws’ for thought when adopting and think about the plight of black cats that tend to lose out on homes to more colourful felines.
Nationally, Cats Protection’s 257 volunteer-run branches and 30 adoption centres are currently looking after more than 6,200 cats. Around half of these are black or black and white and on average each of these cats waits around a week longer than other moggies to be rehomed.
“Once favoured by storytellers in tales of magic and witchcraft, black cats have developed an undeserved bad reputation that is still bubbling away,” said Hilary Wells, Branch Co-ordinator. “However, at Cats Protection we are standing up for the ‘under-cat’ and asking people to remember that fur colour is only skin deep and to consider taking a black cat into their home.”
Archie and Charlie, both 4, came to us because their owner had to move into a flat and wasn’t allowed to keep them. They aren’t related, but have been together since they were kittens, and would like to find a new home together. They are big friendly boys, used to visiting young grandchildren, and both like a fuss and a lap to sit on. Archie is a big black bear of a cat, and he’s the more outgoing – Charlie can be a bit shy. Archie has a heart murmur, which doesn’t cause him any problems or require any medication. It may never cause him any problems, but is just something his new owner needs to be aware of. Archie is shorthaired, and Charlie is fluffy – and he loves being brushed.

Patch is a really friendly boy, who loves a fuss. He came to us as a stray and the vet thinks he is between 3 and 5 years old. He is looking for a home without very young children. Can you offer Patch his forever home?
