Hatch Warren Scientist Honoured
Dr Kanagasooriyam Kanagachandran (Known as Chad) has been awarded an Honorary Fellowship by Swansea University. This recognition is a tribute to his contribution and leadership in science & technology throughout his career. He has over 20 years of experience in product, technology and service innovation in food, beverage, hygiene, pest control, pharmaceutical & biotech sectors including portfolio management expertise.
Chad was born in Batticaloa, Eastern Sri Lanka and completed his primary and secondary education at one of Sri Lanka’s oldest and prestigious institutes, St. Michael’s College. He received an undergraduate degree in Applied Biology and his PhD in Industrial Microbiology from the University of Hertfordshire. He also worked as a post-doctoral research scientist at the University of Hull on a European Union funded project prior to his entry into the commercial world. .
Among his achievements are the invention and patenting of technologies such as the production of omega-3 oils from non-fish sources, the recycling and conversion of brewing industry by-products into biofuel and bio-fertiliser. He has also contributed to the GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative) Technical Working Group on Chemicals and Food Hygiene to address issues of food safety and loss in the Food Supply Chain.
In pursuit of his passion to use biotechnology as an agent for change for a better future, Chad has numerous publications to his name in reputable international journals on microbiology, biotechnology, and green-process strategies covering waste recovery and food production.
Chad has considerable industrial experience ranging from R&D project conceptualization to product/technology commercialisation and collaboration with colleagues at various global institutions including bio-solution focused activities.
The Swansea University Honorary Fellowships are bestowed annually to individuals in recognition of outstanding achievement and contribution to the society; previous recipients come from various disciplines including science, technology, politics, sports and entertainment. Chad lives in Hatch Warren with his wife and 2 children.
