Hatch Warren Runners – Month of the marathons
Brighton was the first marathon of the month and this is a popular choice for runners failing to get a space in London. Hatch Warren Runners had 5 finishers. The conditions were warm but this is a much-loved course that is well supported and the runners really enjoyed the race. In true club style we had a full support team in tow to cheer our runners round. One of the runners, Emma Hunt (far right in photo), was a HWR Couch to 5K graduate. In just two years Emma has gone from no running to marathon, and in a very respectable time too. As a club we are extremely proud of Emma and what she has achieved.
Next marathon was the big one – Virgin London Marathon. Places are highly sought after and runners incredibly lucky to get one in the public ballot. For those failing in the public ballot, there is a second chance for club members as we, as an England Athletics Affiliated Club, get awarded a small number of places. Failing that there are also charity places. We had runners represented in all categories – in total 18 runners, from the very quick to the ‘more leisurely’ in pace. There was also lots of HWR spread around the course cheering. Perfect running weather meant some great times, great medals and wonderful memories for all. Running London really is something very special.
Although there were lots of other smaller events over the month, we can’t let this issue go by without mentioning the St Michaels’s Hospice 5k and 10k runs. In what had been a very wet start to the week, the skies cleared as runners arrived at Down Grange. HWR were by far the most represented local club. We love this event as lots of little Hatchies get to run too. The little ones love the run, being part of a well supported event and, of course, the medal – the huge smiles from the children running make it especially enjoyable for the spectators too. We had runners in the first 10 in both the 5k and 10k and some little legs doing some rather amazing things.
A reminder that HWR will host our own 10k trail race in Farleigh Wallop on 25 September 2016. The race will start near the Farleigh Wallop Club and the course will take in the beautiful countryside and woodland trails around the villages of Farleigh Wallop, Cliddesden and Eliisfiled. In true HWR style, all proceeds from the event will be donated to charity. We’d love to see as many local people as possible. Visit www.hwrunners.co.uk for more information.
HWR meet on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7:15pm with runs going from the Portsmouth Arms and the Co-Op in Beggarwood. Members meet, warm up and then break into groups depending on what distance and pace they plan to run.
