Kapow! Superhero Sunday is Coming
Kids and their parents can sign up now for a Superhero Sunday sports event at Down Grange track on the afternoon of Sunday 20th September. It is being organised by Dr Sarah Holton, a Consultant Occupational Health Physician, of Old Beggarwood Lane and friend Wendy Cornelius, of Chilton Ridge, head of Learning Support at Brighton Hill school, to raise funds for charities Asthma UK and the Anthony Nolan Trust, previously known as the Bone Marrow Trust. Both ladies are members of Hatch Warren Runners and have obtained places in next year’s London Marathon supporting these charities.
Wendy explained that Sarah, as a doctor, sees the suffering and deaths that asthma causes and last year Wendy’s brother needed a stem cell transplant as no other treatment options were available for leukaemia and that the Anthony Nolan Trust was able to locate a donor in USA.
There will be many Superheroes at the event that will run with the children’s races including Mike Wilson, from Beggarwood, who is famous for playing Spiderman to his son Jayden who passed away last Christmas. Other characters also running with the children include Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman and Power Rangers.
Sarah made a request, “It would really help if people could pre-register as this will ensure that all those contestants qualify for a medal. It is just not possible to anticipate the numbers that may turn up on the day and guarantee a medal for them all.”
With check in and registration at 1.50pm the first race is 2.05pm which is 100m for under 5s. This will be followed by 400m for under 8s, 1 mile for 5 – 11s, 1 mile for 12 – 16s and three adult 1 mile races with different target times. Prize giving is planned for 3.50pm. The entry cost is £4 per person entered to race or a family package of 4 racers for £14 or 5 racers for £17. If participants want to obtain sponsors then the entry fee is reduced to £1.50. A sponsorship form can be downloaded.
More details can be seen on the Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/SuperheroSunday where entry forms can be downloaded.
Clubbercise is coming
Did you enjoy going clubbing and dancing the night away but are disappointed that you just don’t have the time anymore? If so then the arrival of Clubbercise at the Hatch Warren Community Centre could be an answer to your prayers.
In the Community Centre with disco lighting and rave glow sticks people can have a really great time dancing to music from the 90s to the present day.
Clubbercise is a super, fun, dance aerobics class suitable for both sexes, although mostly ladies attend, and for most fitness abilities. The great and unique thing about it being taught in a darkened room takes away people’s insecurities and shyness allowing them to lose their inhibitions and dance like no one is watching.
Katie Barrett is excited about bringing this class to Hatch Warren and in the ten years teaching fitness classes she feels that this is by far the most fun class she has ever taught. “The darkened room really lets everyone go without embarrassment and the glow sticks enhance the feeling of a disco but gives the arms a work out too. The complete programme is about giving everyone an enjoyable evening with no heels or hangovers and at the same time providing a great mixed impact exercise routine.”
Katie continued “Wear loose clothing and trainers and if you have fluorescent clothing even better.”
As an introduction the first class on Tuesday 8th September is free from 8 – 8.50pm including the free use of glow sticks. On the following Tuesdays there will be a charge of £5 payable at the door and you can buy a pair of glow sticks for £2.50.
To reserve your free place on 8th September you must contact Katie by email katiebarrett22@hotmail.co.uk or phone her on 07767 437976 or see her facebook page Katie Clubbercise Hampshire.
SOSA Dance and Fitness at the Community Centre
This dance fitness class is solely for ladies and uses music to sing along to as well as learning dance steps as a low impact programme of exercise. It is suitable for ladies of all shapes, sizes, cultures and faiths from the age of 14 up to senior citizens. This is the first time SOSA has been seen in Hampshire and is being run by Jenny Cossins from Basingstoke. Jenny is primarily a dance instructor and a fully qualified fitness instructor who also teaches Aquafit aerobics at the Basingstoke Leisure Park pool.
“I use easy to follow dance routines using fun and catchy dance tunes empowering and inspiring ladies to get singing as well as dancing to tone their entire body from fun, low impact, exercise routines.” explained Jenny.” SOSA stands for solo salsa as it means that ladies can gradually learn the basic steps to all the famous international dances without fear or judgement”.
Jenny advises that participants should wear comfortable clothing that allows for plenty of movement and while stilettos are not suitable, Cuban heels, flats or even trainers are fine. She is confident that participants will have a great time and remember the SOSA ethos of “Dance Yourself Happy.”
The SOSA programme starts at the Hatch Warren Community Centre on Monday 7th September 1.30 to 2.30 pm during term time. The cost is £5 payable at the door. As the Lounge is used for this class there is a restriction of 15 participants so contact Jenny to book your place.
