Basingstoke Lions Club
The Sussex Jazz Kings gave us another memorable night’s trad jazz at QMC. In a break with tradition they sat down to perform. This was in recognition of the fact that some members of the group were recovering from illnesses. They played for an hour before taking a break to allow everyone to refresh their glasses. To me it appeared that their performance was better than ever. And several of the audience confirmed this in remarks overheard during the interval. After the interval they went on to entertain us for a further hour and a half and we got the impression they would happily have gone on a lot longer. They are a truly remarkable group.
Alençon Lions Club Twinning: Ten of us went over to help them celebrate their Club’s 60th Anniversary. We were royally entertained as usual, but we rained on their parade by winning the Jean Le Noac’h Boules Trophy at the traditional annual match and Barbecue. Dire oaths of revenge were sworn and we expect an invasion next year!
MacMillan’s Coffee morning: Definitely the most unhealthy, but enormously enjoyable date in the calendar. Also a good excuse for a prolonged afternoon z-z-z-z-z-z! Our host was definitely missing a trick. He should get himself either a cider press or a pig – the windfall product from either would be equally acceptable.
Our next Quiz Night at Cliddesden Millenium Hall is on 18 November: Contact Philip Wilson philipjhwilson@btinternet.com to reserve your table for 4 at this mental masochists’ marathon. There are still a few tables available. But please remember we can only accommodate 22 teams.
Welfare: We spent £2185 supporting national, international and family disaster appeals. So we really need you to support our upcoming endeavours.
December will see us out and about collecting at various retail outlets as usual.
2018: Our resident impresario (his words not mine), Maurice Hockley, has been out and about talent spotting. As a result our programme for next year already contains The Moscow Drug Club, a superbly talented group of musicians, who will perform for us at QMC on 10 February, to be followed by a stage hypnotist, dancers, choirs and all sorts of other goodies during the year. More anon!
