Kempshott History Group
The Kempshott History Group March meeting was one of contrasts. One of our members talked about the history of Basingstoke Down Fair which was held in the area of Pack Lane/Winchester Road during the 1600 and 1700’s. This was followed by a talk from another member on the battle by residents to get sufficient fresh water piped into Kempshott during the early 1900’s. As some of our members have lived in Kempshott since the 1930’s this gave rise to a lively discussion on how water was provided to various houses and small holdings when Kempshott Village was first being developed.
Future meetings this year will include, in addition to the Thornycroft talk, a talk on the history of the Stag & Hounds Inn and an update on research into Down Grange House.
If you feel you can add anything to our investigations on any of the above, you have memories, photos or documents of Kempshott in the early days or even if you are just interested in history we would be pleased to welcome you to the next meeting of the Group at Kempshott Village Hall on friday 3 May at 2.30pm.

You may also find yourself explaining to the Police and a Court why you thought the cheap quad bike with no paperwork that you bought from a bloke down the pub was a genuine purchase.
The recession has increased pressure on rural communities and this makes it more important that people who have vital knowledge have a safe and anonymous way to give information. We understand that rural communities are close-knit and trust is an important part of rural life, so people may be aware of who
