Recycling Policy
Some residents have queried the recent changes to recycling policy at Basingstoke and Deane so it seems worth giving some details here:
In order to improve recycling rates the new rule is that there should be no recyclable materials such as garden waste or glass in the grey bin. Collecting staff are authorised to give a warning and after three warnings the bin will not be collected.
In Hampshire we only recycle sustainable material. Many authorities recycle much more at kerbside but there is never any guarantee that it is all being recycled and it can often end up abroad or in landfill. Hampshire via project integra (which Basingstoke is a member of and works alongside) works hard to ensure that they know where all recyclables end up and that they are all properly recycled.
Any waste that is not recycled in Basingstoke does not end up at landfill but in the incinerator which generates energy. Even the bottom ash from the incinerator is recycled into things such as road tarmac. Unfortunately this form of recycling under rules does not count as part of our recycling figures, nor does any of the recycling undertaken at the Wade Road tip which is an HCC facility. If these counted our recycling figures would be much higher.
Basingstoke offers a green garden waste collection. The cost of that is very competitive compared to other authorities and you can choose to share sacks with neighbours.
The service starts in February each year and if you take it up later in the year you are charged only for that part of the year. Many authorities do not offer this.
We often gets queries over the glass collection as some bins may not be collected if they are too full. If this is a problem you can receive further green containers free of charge. Or we now offer the new red small wheelie bin.
There is a huge amount of information for residents on recycling on the Council website at http://www.basingstoke.gov.uk/recycling
